not your mother's podcasts
I agree with the Reynard reading for this week in that we need to seek innovative ways to use podcasting for teaching/learning. She is so right in that when new technologies are adopted, their immediate uses often mimic existing methods -- just in a new format. That's fine for early adopters, but when it comes to podcasting, we should now be familar enough with the technology to use it in new ways. This means moving beyond recorded lectures of what happens in class to supplementing course materials with podcasting and challenging students to extend their own knowledge through the creation/use of podcasts.

It does seem that often when new technology and education interact, the innovative aspects of the new technology are not fully realized. Watching a lecture on DVD can be pretty similar to watching a lecture on VHS. . .or it could be considerably different, if the options available on a DVD are fully used. I know that's an old school example, but analogous to a podcast being used as a tape of a lecture.
