portals have progressed

I enjoyed hearing Dr. Bonk's ideas in class re: the difference between online communities of practice and portals. While communities of practice have shared goals and involve both producers AND consumers of knowledge, portals are passive places with no set membership and no commonalities among members. I am pleased to see so many online environments shifting toward communities -- with the help of 2.0, of course.
